Since 1975, it has been illegal to export crude oil to most countries from the United States. But now, oil companies and their allies in Congress are attempting to lift the ban.
After the hottest summer on record with wildfires and drought crippling the western states, and now hurricane season growing in intensity, the last thing we need is more global warming pollution. But big oil companies and their allies in Congress have a different agenda. They are pushing to lift the ban on crude oil exports — that would mean more drilling in the U.S. More drilling means more global warming.
This week, Congress is set to vote on this long standing ban that has been in effect since 1975.
So what would happen if the ban on exporting crude oil was lifted?

Lifting the ban would increase U.S. oil production by up to 3.3 million barrels per day between 2015 and 2030. Senator Elizabeth Warren states that lifting the export ban would increase worldwide carbon emissions by almost 22 million metric tons per year. This is the equivalent of the global warming pollution from five average US coal plants!
What our country needs most is to cut global warming pollution, not add more.
