Executive Summary
New Hampshire’s waterways play an important role in the state’s identity and are known for their natural beauty, exceptional water quality, and ample recreational opportunities. Unfortunately, the future of New Hampshire’s treasured lakes, rivers, and bays is uncertain.
Through case studies of five of New Hampshire’s most treasured waterways – the Great Bay Estuary, Lake Sunapee, the Connecticut River, Lake Winnipesaukee, and the Merrimack River – this report analyzes how rampant growth, pollution, and water withdrawals threaten to destroy the renowned beauty and health of the state’s waterways.
In order to adequately protect New Hampshire’s waters from these threats, this report recommends the implementation of policies and programs in New Hampshire that will:
• Promote responsible growth
• Ensure sustainable water use
• Stop new pollution and clean up existing pollution
