President Obama officially designated the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument -- protecting 87,500 acres of wilderness area and forest in Maine, home to moose, bear, migratory songbirds and more. The area also holds tremendous cultural, historical and ecological significance, in addition to myriad recreational opportunities for visitors. Environment America today filed a citizens’ suit under the federal Clean Water Act against the second-largest chicken producer in the world, Pilgrim’s Pride, for dumping pollution into the Suwannee River from its poultry processing plant in Live Oak, Florida.
After more than a month delay, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service formally listed the rusty patched bumble bee as an endangered species. The native bumble bee is the first bee in the continental United States to be protected by the Endangered Species Act.
