Oil and gas companies are fracking near our communities, polluting our air and water, and risking the health of our children and other vulnerable populations. Fracking often is done very close to vulnerable people – infants, school children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems – even though communities typically seek to keep industrial activities far away from facilities serving these populations, such as schools, hospitals, nursing homes and day care centers.
Environment America, a federation of 29 state environmental groups, today announced its endorsement of 56 candidates who are running for the 115th United States Congress. These 45 House candidates and 11 Senate candidates hail from a total of 19 states.
Thanks to leadership from President Obama, today the Paris Climate Agreement cleared the final hurdle to enter into force. With the European Union voting to join the United States, China, India and other nations in ratifying the agreement, nations representing more than 55 percent of the world’s global warming pollution have now signed on – crossing the minimum threshold for the agreement to become official.
Washington, D.C.–Environment America and a dozen other environmental, conservation and consumer groups delivered more than 280,000 thousand petitions to Administrator McCarthy of the Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx today. The petitions urged strengthening of vehicle efficiency and the corporate average fuel economy standards to cut carbon emissions and protect health.
