How to change our course on energy:

Reduce Our Oil Dependence

We can reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Plug-in hybrid cars that go 100 miles on a gallon of gas already exist. Congress should tell the auto industry to make vehicles that get at least 40 miles per gallon. More

Building An Energy-Efficient America

A new generation of clean, efficient, zero-energy homes and businesses could be just on the horizon. We're calling on decision makers to enact the policy solutions that will put us on track to make all new buildings zero-energy by 2030. More

Clean Energy For America

We can supply power to millions of homes and businesses by harnessing homegrown energy from the sun, wind and crops. That’s why we are calling Congress to require that utilities generate at least 20 percent of America’s electricity from renewable energy sources like wind and solar by 2020 and to extend tax incentives that help homes and businesses make the switch to renewable energy. New Energy Future in brief

There’s no question that America has the technological know-how to dramatically reduce our dependence on oil and other fossil fuels. We can make cars that go 100 miles on a gallon of gas. Wind turbines and solar panels can supply power to millions of homes and businesses. We can make high-performance products and buildings that use a fraction of the energy we use today.

And with war raging in the Middle East, oil and gas prices surging, and global warming threatening our future, we cannot wait. We need to start now. That’s why we’re asking citizens to join us in calling on Congress to endorse a strong, no-nonsense plan to move our country toward a bold, new energy future.

Building a new energy future
Americans want our nation to move to a New Energy Future. State officials and Congress are beginning to act. In 2007, Environment America played a key role in passing an energy bill that will ensure fuel economy standards increase to 35 mpg by 2020. And, many states are adopting policies to increase energy efficiency and renewable energy. But we need to do much more. That’s why our New Energy Future campaign is promoting energy policies at the state and national level that will reduce pollution and make our nation more secure. More info.

Recent actions and results

In a huge victory for clean energy President Bush signed an energy bill that will ensure fuel economy standards increase to 35 mpg by 2020. The bill, which passed with overwhelming support in both the House and the Senate, is the first time in over thirty years that Congress has acted to increase fuel economy. In 2020 the bill will save 1.1 million barrels of oil per day and save consumers $22 billion at the pump.

More state action

We helped enact energy-efficiency standards for a variety of products in 11 states. We've worked with 25 states to pass  renewable energy standards. And we've helped 12 states cut global warming pollution with clean cars programs. When enacted, these programs will reduce gasoline consumption by as much as 7.2 billion gallons per year in 2020 and save consumers up to $16.7 billion annually at the pump in 2020.
