I want clean energy and a green economy!

Government support has helped put renewable energy on a slightly more level playing field with coal, oil, gas and nuclear power, but if Exxon Mobil and its friends on Capitol Hill get their way, the federal government will pull back on its commitment to a clean energy economy—just as we’re about to reap the environmental and economic benefits. Tell Congress to support clean energy and a green economy.

Recently...
In April, the Senate voted to extend critical incentives to the emerging clean energy industries, such as wind and solar power. Much of the federal support for these industries—namely the renewable energy production tax credit and the solar investment tax credit, are set to expire at the end of this year. We’re working to make sure that the House and the president do the same. Read the release.
What's at stake
American ingenuity, investment and hard work have created emerging clean energy industries, such as wind and solar power, that are not only taking steps toward solving global warming and America’s energy problems—they’re creating thousands of good jobs that help the economy and our environment.

Government support has helped put renewable energy on a slightly more level playing field with coal, oil, gas and nuclear power. In the states, forward-thinking energy policies are already making a big difference. Policies such as renewable electricity and energy efficiency standards and tax credits have lead to substantial growth. The federal government must maintain its support for clean energy and follow the lead of the states in passing these proven policies.

In order to put our country on the right track for a clean energy future we need to reduce our energy consumption by 10 percent nationally and get 25 percent of our electricity from clean, renewable sources.

To achieve these goals Congress must:
•    Extend the Renewable Energy Production Tax Credit before clean energy jobs are lost and emerging industries are stifled.
•    Pass a renewable electricity standard to get 20 percent of our energy from clean, renewable sources by 2020.
•    Ensure that large investments in clean, homegrown energy are part of any global warming bill and that future annual spending bills increase support for these important programs.
Building a New Energy Future

Americans want our nation to move to a New Energy Future. State officials and Congress are beginning to act.  In 2007, Environment America played a key role in passing an energy bill that will ensure fuel economy standards increase to 35 mpg by 2020. And, many states are adopting policies to increase energy efficiency and renewable energy. But we need to do much more. That’s why our New Energy Future campaign is promoting energy policies at the state and national level that will reduce pollution and make our nation more secure. More info.

Recent actions and results

The pioneering Environment California Million Solar Roofs bill was signed into law by California Gov. Schwarzenegger last year. In 2007, a bill to promote solar hot water heaters passed as well.

More state action

We helped enact energy-efficiency standards for a variety of products in 11 states. We've worked with 25 states to pass  renewable energy standards. And we've helped 12 states cut global warming pollution with clean cars programs. When enacted, these programs will reduce gasoline consumption by as much as 7.2 billion gallons per year in 2020 and save consumers up to $16.7 billion annually at the pump in 2020.
