WASHINGTON, D.C. – In response to President Obama’s directive to the Environmental Protection Agency to set fuel efficiency standards for medium- and heavy-duty trucks, Environment America Executive Director Margie Alt issued the following statement:

“Cleaner trucks mean a cleaner future. President Obama’s announcement today to set fuel efficiency standards from medium and heavy duty trucks an important step forward in the must-win battle to tackle global warming and get the U.S. off oil. This is the logical next step after the administration finalized new standards for passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks in 2012, which will double fuel efficiency in cars by 2025.

“Last week, President Obama saw first-hand the devastating impacts of global warming when he visited the drought-stricken state of California. Scientists say historic droughts and other extreme weather events could be the new normal for future generations unless we dramatically reduce the carbon pollution fueling global warming.

“We look forward to working with the president to enact his Climate Action Plan and to get our nation off oil.”
