WASHINGTON, D.C. – This morning President Obama’s Oil Spill Commission released chapter four of their report to be released in full on January 11th.

Environment America Oceans Advocate Mike Gravitz released the following statement:

“The report affirms our support of the Obama Administration’s decision in December to take areas being considered for oil drilling “off the table.”

“The Commission’s report found that a spill such as the BP disaster “might well recur.”

“Given the industry’s “systemic” failures and the inherent risks involved, we simply cannot subject the vibrant tourism and fishing businesses along our coasts to this dirty and dangerous practice.

“What we need now is a way to end our oil dependence so that we are no longer reliant in the least on an industry that presents such a looming threat to our precious oceans and coasts.

“The Oil Spill Commission report also underscores why President Obama is right to consider releasing a strong clean cars rule in the coming months.”
