U.S. Senate votes to deny climate science

Washington, D.C. –- The U.S. Senate has officially denied the science of climate change, rejecting an amendment acknowledging that human activity contributes to global warming during today’s debate of the controversial Keystone pipeline bill.
“Global warming is real, but the fact that are our highest governing body has just voted to deny humans are causing it is unreal,” said Environment America’s Anna Aurilio. “It’s dumbfounding that senate leaders are ignoring the truth on catastrophic climate change to push the agenda of big polluters.”
Ninety-seven percent of scientists assert that global warming is real and caused by human activity, and polls show majorities of Republicans, Democrats and Independents accept the basic fact of climate change, as well as measures to curb carbon pollution. The amendment offered by Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) asserted that climate change exists and is caused by human activity. The measure failed 50 to 49, failing to gain the 60-vote threshold needed to pass.
“Americans are concerned about climate change and they want to do something about it,” said Aurilio. “It’s staggering that so many senators are so out of touch with the environmental values we share across our country.”
