TUCSON, Ariz. — In celebration of Earth Day on Monday, Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild shared plans to double the number of solar installations on city-owned properties throughout the city. Over the next two years, the city will add 26 new arrays of solar panels at various city facilities and parks.

The city’s Parks & Recreation and Environmental & General Services Departments joined the Mayor and the solar contractor SOLON Corporation for a ribbon-cutting ceremony unveiling the initiative’s first project: a 934 kW solar installation providing covered parking at Reid Park.

Emma Searson, Go Solar campaign advocate with Environment Arizona, issued the following statement:

“Cities have an unparalleled opportunity to lead by example when it comes to using clean, renewable solar energy. Installing solar energy can help cities like Tucson meet all kinds of challenges, from reducing pollution to building a more resilient electric grid and saving on energy costs.

“By committing to power more of its facilities with clean, renewable energy from the sun, Tucson is continuing its solar leadership. Environment Arizona applauds Tucson’s commitment to solar energy. With so much sun shining down on Arizona cities, we hope to see many more follow suit and take advantage of this plentiful source of clean and renewable energy.”
