TEMPE – On Thursday night, the Tempe City Council approved a resolution committing the city to 100 percent renewable energy by 2035.

The resolution also sets a goal for Tempe to be carbon neutral by 2050. Both goals cover just municipal energy use in city buildings and facilities.

The council voted 4-3 to pass the resolution, with Mayor Mark Mitchell and Councilmembers Lauren Kuby, Randy Keating and David Schapira in support.

Environment Arizona advocate Bret Fanshaw gave this statement:

“We applaud Mayor Mitchell and the Tempe City Council for committing to 100 percent renewable energy at tonight’s council meeting. Communities across America are ready for a swift and steady shift to clean, renewable energy. By building on the city’s original goals to expand solar energy, Tempe can help to lead Arizona into a future totally powered by the sun and the wind.”
