100% Solar Power for North Carolina Schools

Meeting all of a school’s energy needs with 100 percent renewable energy is not only great for the environment, but allows schools to save money on electric bills and invest more in teachers, technology, and textbooks. And, it shows communities the feasibility and benefits, while providing valuable lessons for our children!

We know we can have healthier communities right now and a livable future for kids growing up today. But to get there, we must transform the way we produce and consume energy. That’s got to start with a commitment to 100 percent clean, renewable energy.

Another place we can make a huge difference is by powering our schools with renewable energy. Meeting all of a school’s energy needs with 100 percent renewable energy is not only great for the environment, but it allows schools to save money on electric bills and invest more in teachers, technology, and textbooks. And, it shows communities the feasibility and benefits, while providing valuable lessons for our children!

North Carolina’s Repower our Schools campaign is a great example of this commitment to 100 percent renewable energy. Greenpeace has been working with others, including our affiliate, Environment North Carolina, to make that vision a reality. The campaign, launched one year ago last week, brings together the voices of teachers, students, and parents calling on their school districts to make commitments to 100 percent renewable energy!

The Repower our Schools coalition includes:

Alliance for Climate Education

Clean Air Carolina

Environment North Carolina

Greenpeace

Medical Advocates for Healthy Air

Moms Clean Air Force

NC League of Conservation Voters

NC Sierra Club

NC NAACP

Sustain Charlotte

Renewable Energy Transition Initiative

Last week, the Repower Our Schools coalition released two reports, authored by the the North Carolina Clean Energy Technology Center, detailing how North Carolina school districts could transition to all clean energy!

Environment North Carolina State Director, Dave Rogers, speaking at the release of Repower our Schools report on Durham Public Schools

The reports found that both Durham Public Schools and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Schools could achieve 100 percent renewable energy, while saving millions of dollars over the next 25 years, by immediately installing solar panels to power the schools. Durham and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Schools are two of the largest school districts in North Carolina, and have the opportunity to be leaders by passing resolutions committing to a goal of 100 percent clean energy.

Stay tuned for more exciting 100 percent renewable energy news!
