Environment Arizona, Environment America endorse Katie Hobbs for governor; re-election of Sen. Mark Kelly, Rep. Raúl Grijalva

MESA, Ariz. – Environment Arizona and its national office Environment America announced Sunday that they are endorsing Katie Hobbs for governor of Arizona, the re-election of U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly and the re-election of U.S. Rep. Raúl Grijalva in Arizona’s 3rd Congressional District.

Hobbs, currently Arizona’s secretary of state, has a plan for a “Resilient Arizona” that focuses on water conservation, works to protect Arizonans from the effects of climate change, invests in more parks and open spaces for Arizonans and works to generate more clean energy in the state. All of these would move Arizona, a state facing water crises amid continued population growth, forward environmentally.

Sen. Kelly,  a former astronaut, recently expressed concern about the deforestation he could see, pointing out “if one guy can see changes in our planet from low-Earth orbit, we have got a problem, and we’re putting more carbon up into the atmosphere every year.” In his two years as senator, since replacing the late Sen. John McCain, this similarly independent-minded legislator has focused on one of his constituents’ biggest issues: water. He introduced the Water Infrastructure Modernization Act and another bill of his is designed to help Native American tribes along the Colorado River improve their water conservation efforts.

Rep. Grijalva chairs the House National Resources Committee and is a leading longtime advocate for protecting our public lands. He was instrumental in getting the landmark Land and Water Conservation Act permanently authorized as part of the Great American Outdoors Act in 2020. For his “exceptional commitment to conservation and public lands,” the Wilderness Society honored Grijalva recently with its Ansel Adams Award.

“As Representative Raúl Grijalva has noted — and acted on in Congress for nearly 20 years —  Arizona often disproportionately experiences deadly heatwaves, droughts and wildfires. Senator Kelly has, in his short Senate tenure, worked to mitigate these threats and gubernatorial candidate Katie Hobbs looks poised to follow in their footsteps,” said Environment America President Wendy Wendlandt. “Voting for these three pragmatic leaders will improve the lives of Arizonans — and all Americans. We all benefit from our elected officials conserving land, protecting water and tackling our ongoing climate crisis.”
