Supreme Court Decision Helps Open Door for 100% Clean Energy
On Monday, the Supreme Court removed a major roadblock to 100 percent clean energy when they rejected an attempt by power plant owners to block a rule that values energy savings as much as power generated.
We know we can have healthier communities right now and a livable future for kids growing up today. But to get there, we must transform the way we produce and consume energy. That’s got to start with a commitment to 100 percent clean, renewable energy.
On Monday, the Supreme Court removed a major roadblock to 100 percent clean energy when they rejected an attempt by power plant owners to block a rule that values energy savings as much as power generated. The court ruled that the Federal Energy Regulatory Committee (FERC) has the authority to adopt so-called ‘demand response’ programs, which encourage energy conservation and clean, onsite power by compensating customers who reduce their energy consumption during times of peak demand.
Demand response programs are an essential tool in the transition to 100 percent clean energy because they discourage the use of dirty and expensive power plants that remain open only to operate in periods of high demand. By phasing out unnecessary power plants and encouraging energy efficiency and clean, onsite power, demand response programs can save customers billions of dollars, while making our electric grid more resilient and less vulnerable to brownouts and blackouts. Phasing out unnecessary power plants will also decrease carbon emissions and pollution!
We’ve still got a lot of work to do. But the Supreme Court upheld an important principle that is critical in the shift to 100 percent clean energy.
