Thousands take action to protect Illinois wetlands
On May 22nd the Protect Illinois Waters coalition brought support from Illinoisans all across the state to Springfield calling for action to protect Illinois wetlands.

Environment Illinois is proud to be part of a coalition of 37 organizations that has been calling for Illinois to restore protections to many of our wetlands. This week, that coalition convened in Springfield to bring the over 18,000 individual actions taken by Illinoisans to the offices of our legislators and Governor Pritzker.
Wetlands are indispensable to healthy ecosystems. They serve as natural barriers against flooding, help to protect clean water, bolster soil fertility crucial for agricultural endeavors and serve as sanctuaries for endangered flora and fauna. But last year, due to a U.S. Supreme Court decision, many wetlands that we rely on for flood control and wildlife habitat lost their protection under the federal Clean Water Act. The Illinois General Assembly has the opportunity to restore protections to these vital areas right now with the Wetlands Protection Act currently under consideration.

Only 10% of Illinois’ wetlands remain and we can’t afford to lose any more. Now is the time to contact your legislators and ask them to support wetlands protections. Our clean water and wildlife need our support.
