Public comment delivered by Laura Deehan at Chuckwalla National Monument public meeting

Thank you dept of interior and bureau of land management leadership for coming to California to meet with us and hear from the public about this important proposal. My name is Laura Deehan and I’m the director of Environment California Research & Policy Center.
We envision a better, cleaner and healthier California: one that protects and restores more places where all life can thrive and offers us and our children the opportunity to live healthier, more enriching lives.
Californians value nature for all sorts of reasons — we our wildlife, we Love hiking, climbing or camping. But when it comes to protecting the natural world, we’ve fallen short. Nature has been fragmented into many pieces by roads, fences and other development that blocks the movement of animals. This can knock whole ecosystems out of balance and leaves species more susceptible to disease and climate change when they are sectioned off into small populations.
The proposed Chuckwalla national monument, covering more than 600,000 acres of habitat and connecting other important protected areas, would be a big step toward preventing this problem from becoming worse in the California desert. President Biden can take this opportunity to protect a broad swath of nature for desert tortoises, Chuckwalla lizards, bighorn sheep, golden eagles, desert wildflowers and to ensure that my children and future generations of Californians and people beyond state borders live on a planet rich with nature.
I urge the President to act soon to designate Chuckwalla National Monument and protect more nature in California.
