Statement: California Senate approves bill to hasten clean energy adoption

SACRAMENTO, Calif.—The California State Senate passed legislation (SB 1020) with a 30:8 vote Thursday to hasten the adoption of clean electricity. If approved by the California Assembly and signed by the Governor, this would be a big step in moving California along the path to 100% renewable energy by 2045, as required by SB 100, a law which was passed in 2018.
SB 1020 would add interim targets to require renewable energy and zero-carbon resources to supply 90% of all retail electricity sales by 2035 and 95% by 2040. These targets are consistent with planning that is happening at the CPUC and other state agencies.
The bill would also require all state agencies to rely on 100% renewable energy and zero-carbon resources to serve their own facilities by 2030.
SB 1020 would also establish a Climate and Equity Trust fund to address rapidly rising electricity rates that threaten the affordability of basic service and undermine the economics of beneficial building and transportation electrification.
