Bill to get more clean energy faster passes key committee

Update: Assembly committee on utilities and energy pass  bill to speed up clean energy deployment in California.

An important bill to get more clean energy in California was voted out of a key committee today with 12 aye votes and 0 no votes. 3 Assembly members did not vote. I was a lead witness at the hearing speaking in support of the bill.

California already has a plan to get to 100% clean energy by 2045, and a requirement to have 60% of our energy from renewables by 2030. But there is nothing to make sure that we get closer to 100% renewables in advance of 2045. SB1020 by Sen. Laird, would do three important things to accelerate our path to 100% renewable:

1. It sets benchmarks to get to 90% zero carbon electricity by 2035 and 95% by 2040. These important benchmarks will help to us get more renewable energy on the grid sooner.

2. It requires that state agencies get 100% of their energy from clean energy sources by 2030.

3. It sets up a clean energy trust fund to make sure that the cost to transition to a clean energy economy is not all on the backs of rate payers.

The bill now heads to the Assembly natural resources committee for a final policy committee hearing. We will be supporting it all the way!
