Victory: California voters approve $10 billion for climate, clean energy projects
Proposition 4 will help prevent wildfires, protect clean water and invest in clean energy infrastructure
Prop 4 passes!
California voters made a strong statement in support of the environment and climate action this 2024 election by passing Proposition 4. Prop 4 approves $10 billion in bonds to fund a variety of programs that help mitigate and address the impacts of climate change. Prop 4 passed with the strong support of approximately 58% of voters.
Prop 4 invests in proactive climate solutions that will:
- Prevent devastating wildfires and smoke by creating fire breaks and removing flammable brush, increasing forest health, improving early detection and upgrading firefighting equipment
- Provide safe, reliable drinking water by upgrading water infrastructure, restoring groundwater supplies, increasing stormwater capture and providing better water treatment
- Protect California’s iconic natural lands by preserving open spaces, enhancing and restoring habitats and protecting wildlife
- Build clean energy infrastructure to kickstart offshore wind development, modernize our electric grid and build batteries to store clean energy for when it’s needed
Environment California helped get out the vote on election day by encouraging students on college campuses to vote yes on Prop 4. We also led the charge to include significant funding for clean energy offshore wind infrastructure in the bond, securing nearly half a billion dollars to upgrade California’s port infrastructure to kickstart crucial offshore wind development.
Setting the stage for more climate action
Prop 4 is a bright spot for climate action in the 2024 election, demonstrating that a majority of Californians want to protect our state from the impacts of climate change and cut global warming pollution with clean energy investments. 2025 will be an important year for state environmental action. Unlocking significant climate investments with Prop 4 gives us strong momentum going forward, setting the stage for even bolder action to safeguard our environment and lead the nation on addressing climate change.
