Renewables’ share of electrical generation up 10% in 1st half of 2024
Solar and wind were the nation’s fastest growing sources of electricity in first half of 2024

Newly released data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) confirms that during the first half of 2024 solar and wind were the nation’s fastest growing sources of electricity as the mix of all renewables increased their output by nearly 10%.
The combination of utility-scale and small-scale solar (such as rooftop installations) increased by 26.3% in the first six months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. Small-scale solar (i.e., systems <1-MW) accounted for almost 30% of all solar generation and provided 2% of U.S. electricity supply in the first six months of this year.
“Every small scale solar installation on rooftops protects open space and produces power close to where it’s needed in homes and businesses,” said Johanna Neumann, Senior Director, Campaign for 100% Renewable Energy for Environment America Research & Policy Center.
