Fort Collins is now the ninth Colorado city to choose a path toward a fossil fuel free future.

On Oct. 2, the Fort Collins City Council voted 6-1 to commit to 100 percent renewable electricity by 2030. With major wind and solar projects currently underway to increase the portfolio of Platte River Power Authority, the city’s power provider, to 50 percent renewable in the next few years, council members are confident the city can achieve the resolution’s overall goal of achieving 100 percent renewable.

“The Fort Collins vote to move to 100 percent renewable electricity by 2030 reaffirms its leadership role in Colorado’s transition to a renewable energy future,” said Environment Colorado State Director Garrett Garner-Wells in a statement. “Coupled with its commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050, Fort Collins is a model for goals and policies that address the climate crisis head on.”

Fort Collins is one of dozens of communities, college campuses and businesses that have committed to renewable energy across the country.
