Save America’s Wildlife

With Governor’s signature, Colorado welcomes back the wolverine

The Governor signed Senate Bill 24-171, marking a significant step towards reintroducing North American wolverines to our state.

Right now, there are only 250-300 wolverines left in the lower 48 states. These animals are at risk of forever disappearing from our lands.

The wolverine reintroduction bill  received strong bipartisan  support, passing the House with a 51-13 vote and the Senate with a 29-5 vote. Yesterday, Governor Polis signed the bill at a ceremony on Loveland Pass, during a bill signing tour on the western slope.

Colorado’s rugged terrain is perfect for wolverine populations, which require high elevations and deep snowpack.

This legislative victory initiates a multi-year planning process for the reintroduction of wolverines to Colorado. For more details on what comes next, you can  view this presentation from Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

We extend our deepest gratitude to Governor Polis for signing the bill into law and Senator Perry Will, Senator Dylan Roberts, Representative Barbara McLachlan, and Representative Tisha Mauro for their bipartisan leadership on this initiative.
