TALLAHASSEE, Fla.–Today, State Sen. Dana Young (R-Tampa) and State Rep. Kathleen Peters (R-Treasure Island) announced that they are filing bills (SB 462 and HB 237) that would ban fracking in Florida.

In response, Environment Florida state director Jennifer Rubiello, a member of the Floridians Against Fracking Steering Committee, issued the following statement:

“We would like to thank Senator Dana Young and Representative Kathleen Peters for championing bills that will save Florida’s waters and communities from fracking. Last year, nearly half of the state senate and close to a third of the state house –including both Democrats and Republicans — co-sponsored a fracking ban. We’re proud to live in a state where bipartisanship can work to protect our environment.

“We’re equally proud to stand alongside 90 cities and counties that have passed ordinances or resolutions opposing fracking and a broad coalition of business owners, environmental advocates, union leaders and public health experts who support a fracking ban.

“Florida’s waters are part of what makes our state extraordinary and we need to protect them. Fracking can contaminate water resources through accidents, leaks, and spills. With so many threats already plaguing our waterways, now is the time to protect our waters and ban fracking in Florida once and for all. We’re glad that Senator Young and Representative Peters are standing up for a fracking ban and truly representing the best interests of Floridians.”
