TAMPA, Fla. – The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change officially released its latest report on global warming yesterday. The report adds to the ever-growing body of evidence that action on to limit carbon pollution is urgently needed – and without it, risk to future generations will only continue to grow. Jennifer Rubiello, field associate with Environment Florida issued the following statement in response:

“We already know that global warming is happening and the chief cause is the burning of fossil fuels. What this report makes crystal clear is that serious action now to limit carbon pollution is needed to reduce the risk to our children and future generations.

“When the risks are as dramatic as intense flooding of our coastal communities, sea level rise, or ocean acidification destroying our precious coral reefs, we owe it to future generations to act.

“We know what we have to do to reduce carbon pollution, and we already have the tools in place. Our new report, Moving America Forward, shows that clean energy policies to expand renewable energy and increase efficiency have already reduced Florida’s carbon pollution in 2012 by the equivalent of taking over 900,000 cars off the road.

“The Environmental Protection Agency is working on a new plan that could build on this success with limits on carbon pollution from power plants, the nation’s largest source of carbon pollution.

“The report from the IPCC makes the urgency to act on climate crystal clear. We call on leaders at all levels of government to support EPA’s crucial action in the fight to protect our communities from global warming.”
