Tell state leaders: Defend rooftop solar
Once again, Florida utilities are working to discourage rooftop solar by slashing net metering, which lets solar users give their extra solar energy to their neighbors and get credited for it on their bills. It incentivises people to add rooftop solar, by ensuring they can use those credits to help pay for power at night, on cloudy days or after an extreme weather event.
In Florida, power companies have to credit a customer with the fair market value for each kilowatt they send back to the grid. But some power companies are trying to reduce the rate or eliminate that credit altogether.
As temperatures in Florida continue to climb, intensifying our storm seasons and erasing our coastlines, we need to diversify our energy sources away from fossil fuels like coal and natural gas. Fairly compensating rooftop solar owners for the energy they provide to the electricity grid is commonsense, and helps to encourage more local clean energy.
