Georgia’s first electric bike program launches in Atlanta

Georgia launched its first electric bike rebate program.

On June 16th, Atlanta launched the first electric bike rebate program in Georgia. The program would give participants $500 to $2,000 in rebates on qualified e-bikes from participating local bike shops. Transportation consistently ranks as the largest single source of climate pollution in Fulton and DeKalb counties.

The program is similar to programs supported by sister organizations in  Colorado and Austin and aims to provide affordable and environmentally friendly transportation options to Atlanta’s residents, particularly moderate and low-income individuals. About 800 to 1,000 e-bikes are expected to be purchased through the rebate program, with rebates limited to one per resident.

Are you an Atlanta resident interested in registering for the rebate program? Here are some things to know:

  • The program provides a point-of-sale rebate, with the rebate amount deducted from the price of the bike at purchase.
  •  Atlanta residents can register at www.atlantaregional.org/ebikerebate during a one week period from Sunday, June 16 to Sunday, June 23. A lottery process will be used to determine who receives the rebates.
  • If you make at or below 80% of the Atlanta region’s median household income of $54,000/yr. you’ll qualify for a  $1,500 rebate on a standard e-bike and $2,000 on a cargo-ebike.
  • If you make above the household income threshold you could get a  $500 rebate on a standard e-bike or $1,000 on a cargo e-bike.

Incentive programs, like the e-bike tax rebate, can boost e-bike sales and usage while reducing vehicle miles traveled by gas-powered cars–meaning fewer polluting cars on the road and reduced carbon emissions and congestion in Atlanta.
