Each year 22 million pounds of plastic enter the Great Lakes, and just over half of that ends up in Lake Michigan. This plastic waste harms fish, birds and other wildlife and too much of that plastic comes from single-use items that we don’t need.

It doesn’t have to be this way: We can reduce the use of single-use plastic items in our own lives and support policies that help move Illinois toward a future free of single-use plastic waste.

This month we’re celebrating Plastic Free July by sharing tips and stories about reducing plastic waste with neighbors and community members through the media. On Tuesday, July 9th we held an event to learn how to write an effective letter to the editor and take action to protect the environment.
