Ask Gov. Pritzker to lead the way on wetland protections
Wetlands play a vital role in a healthy environment and yet Illinois only has around 10 percent of our historic wetlands due to sprawl and other destructive human actions.
Our remaining wetlands contribute to the rich biodiversity of the Great Lakes region by providing habitat for local wildlife and migratory birds. They act like the kidneys of the ecosystem, filtering out pollution and helping to support clean water in our rivers and lakes like Lake Michigan where millions get their drinking water. They are also important carbon sinks and help to mitigate flood risk.
Without strong protections of our wetlands, we put the health of nearly every aspect of our environment at risk. But, in 2023 the U.S. Supreme Court removed federal Clean Water Act protections for many wetlands here in Illinois and across the country.
Governor Pritzker can help lead the response to these clean water rollbacks. Ask the Governor to support restoring protections for all of Illinois’ remaining wetlands.
