Bipartisan group of 24 governors join us in standing up for clean cars
Throughout our national network, staff and members have repeatedly won and defended standards that improve gas mileage and reduce pollution from cars and trucks. Now, some powerful voices are echoing our position.
Throughout our national network, staff and members have repeatedly won and defended standards that improve gas mileage and reduce pollution from cars and trucks. Now, some powerful voices are echoing our position.
On July 9, 24 governors, representing both parties and more than half the U.S. population, publicly opposed the Trump administration’s moves to roll back Clean Car Standards. The statement called for strong national gas mileage and auto emission standards and the preservation of states’ authority to set even more robust rules.
“We have to address the root cause of climate change, and that means tackling transportation emissions,” said Morgan Folger, director of our national network’s Clean Cars campaign. “Rolling back the Clean Car Standards would increase petroleum consumption by 500,000 barrels per day—a dangerous step backward at a time when we need to be reducing our emissions as much as possible.”
UPDATE: On July 25, four automakers reached a deal with the state of California that would increase fuel efficiency to 50 miles per gallon.
