Renewable energy provided one quarter of nation’s electricity

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s  August “Electric Power Monthly” report, renewable energy sources provided a quarter of the nation’s electrical generation during the first half of 2023.

Notably, the amount of electricity America got from the sun grew 12% faster in the first six months of this year, compared to the same period in 2022. Solar’s growth was primarily driven by more widespread adoption in small-scale distributed solar, such as rooftop solar, whose output increased by more than any other energy source.

“Two decades ago, if you had told energy forecasters that renewable energy would produce 1/4 of America’s electricity in 2023, they would have told you to get your head checked,” said Johanna Neumann, Senior Director of Environment America Research & Policy Center’s Campaign for 100% Renewable Energy. “Renewable energy sources could meet our power needs many times over and the technology to harness those pollution-free energy sources has never been better. It’s time to lean in.”
