As our Conservation Advocate, you’ll work with our Conservation team to advocate for:
- Strong safeguards for our ocean and critical species such as Humpback whales and sea otters.
- Permanent protections for our most vulnerable and significant beautiful places, including the coast, forests and desert unprotected and at risk of development.
- Increasing and stabilizing funding for programs that protect endangered species.
- Preventing logging and development in old-growth areas in our state and national forests.
- A strong and comprehensive environment-first conservation agenda that works for more nature
Environment California is a policy and action group with tens of thousands of supporters across the state. Our mission is to protect clean air, clean water and open space. Environment California led the effort to commit California to generating 100 percent of our electricity from clean, renewable sources by 2045. We’ve also reduced plastic pollution flowing into the Pacific Ocean, have stopped oil drilling and blocked efforts to expand fracking, and have protected parks, coast and forests throughout the state.
In every campaign we run, we put the earth first. Nothing else matters if we don’t have a healthy planet. We have a bold vision of a greener world. We also know that lasting progress for the planet comes one challenging step at a time. And to make progress sustainable, we need to reach out to everybody, not just the people who already agree with us. We recruit supporters from every part of the state we can — whether it’s considered “red,” “blue” or “purple.” We work with any elected official — Democrat or Republican — who wants to protect our environment. And we work hard to build support and turn public opinion and political momentum toward a greener, healthier world.
Advocate representative responsibilities:
Represent Environment California and advance our strategy in Sacramento:
- Develop and advance our federal and state strategy on protecting our ocean, forests and endangered species, preventing dangerous offshore drilling, and other key issues.
- Develop strong and collaborative relationships with state agencies, partner organizations, coalitions, legislators and congressional staff on both sides of the aisle, as well as other stakeholders, to advance shared goals.
- Seek out and identify policy opportunities related to our issue portfolio and make recommendations regarding policy positions and messaging.
- Work with your team to develop materials for lawmakers, the public and the media to help advance our campaigns, including opinion editorials, press releases, letters to the editor, action campaign emails, fact sheets, bill summaries and policy briefs, regulatory comments, analyses, and presentations.
Fundraise from charitable foundations and individual donors to support our program:
- Meet with foundation staff and donors to pitch projects for funding.
- Work with your team to write and submit grant proposals.
Meet with individual donors and ask them to deepen their support. - Work with our citizen outreach team to build and develop our grassroots membership base.
Build a team:
- Be part of our team of advocates and campaign staff to advance our policy goals. Advocates may serve as mentors or supervisors to less-experienced staff.
- Participate in recruitment and make hiring recommendations.
This position requires exercising discretion and independent judgment in making decisions in matters of significance.
Qualifications
You are:
- An experienced campaign advocate, campaign staffer or grassroots organizer with at least three years of team building and/or coalition building experience.
- An effective communicator with excellent writing and verbal skills. Experience with traditional media or digital communications is a plus.
- Creative and effective at solving complex problems, a strategic thinker who can take advantage of new opportunities.
Good at building relationships, a good listener with a track record of successful access-building. - Well-organized and able to work on multiple legislative and administrative proposals.
- Passionate about the environment, solving the climate crisis and using the power of grassroots organizing to win campaigns.
Additional helpful experience:
Experience in a legislative office within Congress, a state Legislature, or with an environmental or public health advocacy organization is a plus. Fundraising experience, particularly in grant-seeking from charitable foundations.
Compensation & Benefits:
The starting compensation range is $36,000-$42,000 and depends on relevant experience and/or education. Environment California offers an excellent benefits package.
