Groups urge continued progress on appliance efficiency

Environment America joined 13 other environmental organizations on a letter to the Department of Energy expressing support for the Department of Energy’s appliance efficiency standards program and to urge the administration to continue the work necessary to cut energy waste through strong standards.

The signing groups, which included Environment America, Natural Resources Defense Council, Sierra Club, Union of Concerned Scientists and RMI, expressed support for the Department’s proposal to update energy efficiency standards for water heaters and urged the near-term finalization of standards for other products, including furnaces, distribution transformers, and stoves. The letter stated that the department has estimated that standards for these four products could avert a combined 2.4 billion metric tons of climate emissions cumulatively while saving consumers $570 billion.

“Updated energy efficiency standards are a critical part of the nation’s transition to clean energy,” said Johanna Neumann, Senior Director of the Campaign for 100% Renewable Energy at Environment America.
