Environement Maryland canvassers headed out to knock on doors to support producer responsibility.

On Wednesday, the Maryland State Senate’s Education, Energy, and Environment Committee voted to support SB222 to reduce packaging waste and hold producers responsible for the waste they create.

Environment Maryland has been knocking on doors since January 1st to talk to Marylanders about plastic waste, having nearly 5,000 conversations and collecting letters of support. I wanted to share some of their experiences.

The bill (HB284/SB222) is sponsored by Senator Malcolm Augustine in the State Senate and Delegate Sara Love. in the House of Delegates.

Our report “Break the Waste Cycle” details how producer responsibility has proven to be an effective approach to reducing waste and improving recycling.

Next, the bill will be up for a vote before the full Maryland State Senate.

Call on Costco to move beyond single-use plastic packaging

In the face of a plastic pollution crisis that's growing more dire by the day and putting hundreds of species of wildlife in harm's way, retailers like Costco have a responsibility to reduce the use of wasteful single-use plastic wherever and however they can.
