As Massachusetts legislators consider whether to commit the state to 100 percent clean energy, seven of our communities already are raising the bar.

On Aug. 17, Environment Massachusetts Research & Policy Center released “Renewable Communities 2021,” a report featuring renewable energy case studies of seven Bay State communities. The report shined a spotlight on Arlington and Winchester, Chelsea, the Cape and Vineyard Electric Cooperative, Mendon and Upton, Natick, Springfield and Worcester for their adoption of renewable electricity, energy storage, clean heating and energy efficiency.

“The best ideas for clean energy often start at the local level,” said Ben Hellerstein, Environment Massachusetts Research & Policy Center state director. “Right now, we need to move rapidly toward 100 percent renewable energy from sources like the sun and the wind. These communities are showing how to make it happen.”

Environment Massachusetts is advocating for a statewide 100 percent renewable commitment that already has endorsements from 86 legislators.
