MA DCR offers First Day Hikes across the Commonwealth
Free guided hikes on New Year’s Day – Wednesday, Jan 1, 2025
The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) will host its 34th annual First Day Hikes across 14 state parks. This “signature” initiative began in 1992, when 380 participants celebrated the new year with a hike at Blue Hills Reservation in Milton. Since then, it has expanded statewide and gained national recognition in 2012, when America’s State Parks adopted the program, bringing First Day Hikes to all 50 states.
This year’s free guided hikes will take place in Boston, Saugus, Rockport, Concord, North Andover, Mashpee, Uxbridge, Gardner, Townsend, West Boylston, Worcester, Turners Falls, and Chester. Participants will receive a commemorative winter hat and pin. Last year’s event drew over 3,000 hikers.
A tip from a hiker last year is to get there early, as some parks may reach their parking capacity.
