Massachusetts state Senate passes clean energy bill, bringing it closer to final passage.
The Massachusetts state Senate on Thursday passed S.2967, “An Act promoting a clean energy grid, advancing equity and protecting ratepayers,” to accelerate clean energy deployment across the state.
If signed into law, the new legislation will streamline the siting process for clean energy projects, promote energy storage and allow for longer-term contracts for offshore wind power projects. The law will also increase and improve electric vehicle charging stations and allow gas utilities to deliver geothermal energy services.
Massachusetts has a goal of producing 40% of its electricity from renewable energy sources by 2030. As of 2023, the state was getting 12% of its electricity from those sources. Massachusetts has the technical potential to meet all its energy needs with the sun, the wind and other renewables.
The bill also would subsidize nuclear fusion technology, if scientists figure out how to safely use that technology to generate power. It also would redefine “clean energy” to include the current version of nuclear power generated by power plants in Connecticut.
Overall – the climate bill is a significant step forward, helping Massachusetts pick up the pace on clean energy. By streamlining siting for renewable energy projects, lawmakers are positioning Massachusetts to realize its enormous renewable energy potential.
We appreciate the hard work and determination of Chairman Barrett and Chairmen Roy for not giving up and putting our a strong bill and the state Senate for passing the bill.
The bill now heads to the House, and we urge them to pass the bill quickly. If passed, it must also be signed by Governor Healey to become law.
