Lawmakers reintroduce bill to commit Massachusetts to 100% renewable energy

Seven states in the U.S. have committed to 100 percent clean energy. Massachusetts — the state with our nation’s greatest offshore wind potential — is not among them, yet. 

That’s why, on May 4, Environment Massachusetts launched our campaign urging lawmakers to pass the 100% Clean Act, filed by state Sen. Joseph Boncore and state Reps. Marjorie Decker and Sean Garballey. The act would commit Massachusetts to 100 percent clean electricity by 2035 and 100 percent clean heating and transportation by 2045.

“Today, most of our energy comes from fossil fuels — but it doesn’t have to be that way,” said Ben Hellerstein, state director for Environment Massachusetts. “When our communities run on renewable energy, our air will be cleaner, our families will be healthier, and we’ll help prevent the worst impacts of global warming.”

So far, 13 of 40 state senators and 63 of 160 state representatives have cosponsored the 100% Clean Act.
