When asked by a group of young admirers for advice, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said, “My advice is fight for the things that you care about. But do it in a way that will lead others to join you.”

As a college professor, a lawyer with the American Civil Liberties Union, and a judge on the nation’s highest courts, the diminutive Justice Ginsburg made an outsized impact on the rights and freedoms of the American people, especially the equality of American women.

Her record of historic accomplishment was, despite all of the Notorious R.B.G. memes, painstakingly earned through prudence, patience, persistence, civility and a preference for making a difference over making a statement. As King said, the arc of the moral universe is long, but bends toward justice. Ruth Bader Ginsburg added, but only “if there is a steadfast commitment to see the task through to completion.”

A resolute dedication to democratic ideals coupled with the wisdom to recognize how and when to see the task through to completion: Advocates for all causes would do well to emulate the qualities that made Justice Ginsburg a truly historic figure. We offer our condolences to her children and grandchildren. The country she worked so hard to improve will miss her.
