The Cooper River is the sixth most polluted river in terms of carcinogenic toxins according to a report by Environment America, a federation of state-based, citizen-funded environmental advocacy organizations.

The report relied on data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and looked at a range of toxins including carcinogenic, developmental and reproductive. The report hopes to encourage states to take action and enforce the Clean Water Act.
