State becomes 12th to commit to 100% clean electricity, with 2040 goal and boosts renewables and energy efficiency
Today, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation making Michigan the latest state to set its sights on 100% clean energy. The package of bills signed into law by the governor (Senate Bills 271, 273 and 502) establishes a 100% clean electricity standard by 2040, requires utilities to get more of their energy from renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, and updates the state’s energy efficiency goals and programs, among other provisions.
“By setting a 100% clean energy goal Governor Whitmer and the state legislature are creating a situation ripe for Michigan to realize its vast renewable energy potential,” said Johanna Neumann, senior director of Environment America’s Campaign for 100% Renewable Energy. “After all, Michigan has enough wind resources to power the state 3.5 times over and enough sunshine to meet 55 times the state’s 2020 electricity demand. They’d be foolish not to tap it.”
Michigan joins 11 other states with commitments to 100% clean or renewable energy.
