Celebrating New England’s ocean treasures
From breaching whales to deep sea coral, we highlighted New England's amazing ocean places this week

This week, we celebrated New England’s amazing ocean places.
Home to breaching whales, dive-bombing seabirds and even centuries old coral, the ocean ecosystems off the coast of Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut gave us a lot to work with. Between the whale-haven of Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, the deep kelp forest at Cashes Ledge, and the mysterious depths of the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument, we were able to share stories of the ocean life that relies on our seas.
Here is a selection of the best posts from the week of celebration:
Next on our tour of ocean treasures: #CashesLedge, located in the Gulf of Maine, is home to the largest coldwater kelp forest in the eastern US.
We got to discover more about this kelp wonderland from Prof. Jon Witman (@WitmanLab) on our June webinar: https://t.co/PKOYYcFtJj

You don’t have to dive deep to see incredible ocean life at Stellwagen Bank: you might spot a humpback fluke or a critically endangered North Atlantic right whale feeding at the surface!
