Statement from Doug O’Malley, state director of Environment New Jersey, on the introduction of legislation in Congress in opposition to the Trump administration’s offshore drilling plan.  In the U.S. House, Congressman Frank Pallone joined his colleagues in introducing legislation that would permanently ban offshore drilling in the Atlantic Ocean.

“The Trump Administration has acted as a one-man wrecking ball against our Atlantic Ocean and Jersey Shore. These reckless attacks fueled by the oil industry are in for reckoning. No one messes with our beaches, and it’s time to permanently ban Big Oil from our shores. We thank Rep. Pallone for swinging the gavel to protect the Jersey Shore.

“The reality, proven time and again, is that when we drill, we spill. Opening our coasts to offshore drilling would devastate our marine ecosystems and our way of life.

“Sir Isaac Newton said that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. This is the equal and opposite reaction we’ve been waiting for. We’re sending a big thank you to Congressman Frank Pallone for their efforts to protect our coastal waters from offshore drilling.

“Threatening our beaches and coastal communities, all for a little more oil, is not only the wrong choice, it’s unnecessary, as renewable energy and clean technologies continue to soar.”
