New Jersey takes two steps forward on offshore wind

New Jersey is now two steps closer to harnessing the vast power of the winds that blow off our shore.

The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities voted on Sept. 17 to take the next step in leasing offshore areas where wind turbines will generate 1,100 megawatts (MW) of clean electricity—almost double the energy produced by the now-closed Oyster Creek nuclear plant. Days earlier, at the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco, Gov. Phil Murphy called for action that will result in another 1,200 MW of wind power for New Jersey in both 2020 and 2022.

“New Jersey is jumpstarting our offshore wind industry by making bold pledges—and then working to achieve them,” said Environment New Jersey State Director Doug O’Malley. “These actions will bring us closer to achieving a clean, renewable energy future. It’s time to go big on wind and the Murphy administration is leading the charge.”
