Forests

Keeping our forests healthy, whole and wild.

The trees that make up our forests are some of the oldest living things on Earth, many of them older than America itself. These forests provide crucial habitat for thousands of species. They provide limitless opportunities for recreation, exploration and wonder. What’s more, our forests absorb and store carbon dioxide, which makes them crucial allies in our race against climate change. Together we can protect our forests from road-building, logging, development and other threats.

Watershed victory to put the PennEast gas pipeline on ice

PennEast Pipeline Co. announced on Monday that it was pulling the plug on its proposed 116-mile gas pipeline that would have crossed Pennsylvania and New Jersey to deliver methane gas from Pennsylvania fracking wells. The announcement came on the heels of a Supreme Court decision that granted PennEast the right to use eminent domain to seize public and private lands for the pipeline. Nevertheless, the proposal faced  stiff environmental permitting challenges from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) under the Clean Water Act. The company cited environmental permitting difficulties in its decision to withdraw the project.

Ban on Fracking Adopted throughout Delaware River Watershed

The Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC) permanently banned fracking throughout the Delaware River Watershed today, affecting four states and water supplies for millions, after eleven years of raging debate and public discourse. The Delaware River Frack Ban Coalition and many members of the public - reported by DRBC to be at 400 during the meeting - joined the virtual DRBC meeting, where a vote on banning fracking in the watershed had been advertised. The DRBC voting members - the Governors of the four states that are part of the Delaware River Watershed (New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware) and a federal representative for President Biden from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - voted to enact the regulations that were pending since the public comment period closed in March 2018. All four states voted to approve the ban; the Army Corps representative abstained.
