It took a green sea turtle hatchling rescued from an Australian beach six full days to purge its digestive system of all the plastic it had mistaken for food.

Though the turtle was ultimately alright, many animals can starve when they ingest too much plastic that they can’t digest — a tragic fate that is only becoming more common as more plastic waste pours into the ocean.
