SANTA FE, N.M. — New Mexico is a national trailblazer on climate action after Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed the groundbreaking Energy Transition Act (ETA) into law. The ETA, sponsored by Sens. Jacob Candelaria and Mimi Stewart and Rep. Nathan Small, instructs New Mexico utilities to get at least 50 percent of their electricity from renewable energy sources by 2030 and to be 100 percent carbon-free by 2045. The bill (SB 489) passed the both the State Senate and House with bipartisan support.

Environment New Mexico director Sanders Moore issued the following statement:

“Given New Mexico’s abundance of sun and wind, the Land of Enchantment should rightfully be the Land of Clean Energy. The forward thinking of Gov. Lujan Grisham and state legislators from both parties means that we can keep aiming high and reaching our full potential when it comes to maximizing our world-class renewable energy resources. We know that New Mexicans overwhelmingly support powering our state with wind and solar energy, and now we have leadership that will act on that.

“The Energy Transition Act will help New Mexico both meet our energy needs without polluting our air and water, and also do our part to address global warming. Whether it’s increasingly severe droughts, wildfires or floods, the impacts of climate change are not just future threats — they’re already here. Transitioning our state from fossil fuels to renewable energy will help ensure that New Mexico contributes to ensuring a cleaner, safer environment for generations to come.”
