Right whales now critically endangered

After years of deadly interactions with humans, the North American right whale has been reclassified as “critically endangered,” the most serious designation for any animal that still exists in the wild. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which since 1964 has tracked and categorized animals’ risks of global extinction on its Red List of Threatened Species, upgraded the right whale’s status on Wednesday.

Statement: Virginia becomes first southern state to join RGGI

RICHMOND, Va. -- Gov. Ralph Northam announced Wednesday that Virginia is officially the first southern state to join the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), a consortium of Mid-Atlantic and Northeast states which has worked together for more than a decade to successfully cut pollution from power plants.

Statement: Pipeline victories a win for a stable climate

A federal judge vacated an Army Corps of Engineers approval for the Dakota Pipeline on Monday. The court ordered the pipeline to be emptied within 30 days for an estimated 13 months while the Corps conducts an environmental review. This ruling came a day after Duke Energy and Dominion Power announced they are abandoning the Atlantic Coast Pipeline due to rising legal challenges and uncertainties.

Statement: House infrastructure bill includes many positives for clean energy

The U.S. House of Representatives approved a $1.5 trillion infrastructure bill Wednesday. The Moving Forward Act (H.R. 2) includes a number of provisions on clean energy, including extensions for clean energy tax incentives. Specifically, critical extensions for solar and wind energy tax credits, expanded incentives for electric vehicles and energy efficiency, and new credits for energy storage.
