Environment America, which organizes its staff, members and supporters across every state to improve the quality of our environment, announced today its endorsement of Doug Jones to represent Alabama in the United States Senate.
“The contrasts between Doug Jones and his opponent, particularly so on environmental issues, could not be more stark,” said Environment America’s Deputy Political Director, Will Eley. “Doug Jones trusts the impartial science behind climate change, values Alabama’s public lands, and rightly argues that America’s withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accords was both a moral and economic misstep for our country.”
“Having been born and raised in Alabama, I grew up watching politicians like Roy Moore climb to power at the expense of those who needed help the most: people simply looking for reliable public transportation to get to and from work; fellow citizens and neighbors with no choice but to breathe polluted air and drink unsafe water. That can change on December 12th.”
“It goes without saying that on matters of ethical governance, common decency, and protecting our natural environment, too many leaders in Alabama, for too long, have failed those who put them into office. Eight water systems in Alabama have been deemed unsafe in the past year alone, and the state is still home to the single most pollutive power plant in country. Who is benefitting from this at-any-cost approach to growing the economy? Not the voters of Alabama. That’s for certain.”
Environment America’s members and supporters know that defending the environment requires independent research, tough-minded advocacy, and spirited grassroots action. Doug Jones’s campaign embodies these very actions and ideals, which is why Environment America, on behalf of its members and supporters in Alabama and nationwide, could not be more proud to endorse his campaign. Mr. Jones is qualified, trustworthy, and has a reputation for looking after the interests of all Alabamians.
Above all else, Doug Jones understands that reaching across the aisle is the only way for our nation to move forward and overcome our many challenges.
We all want clean air, clean water and open spaces. But it takes independent research and tough-minded advocacy to win concrete results for our environment, especially when powerful interests stand in the way of environmental progress. That’s the idea behind Environment America. We focus on protecting this nation’s air, water, and open spaces. We speak out and take action at the local, state and national levels to improve the quality of our environment and our lives.
