WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. now has one million solar installations, and that number is expected to double in another two years. Environment America joined solar manufacturers, installers and other renewable energy advocates today at a live solar installation in Northeast D.C. to celebrate the achievement.

“Our country is now ‘million solar strong’ because of enormous public support, smart pro-solar policies in D.C. and across the country, and American innovation,” said Rob Sargent, senior director of Environment America’s Energy program. “The clean energy progress we’ve made gives us the confidence we can take it to the next level.”

Solar power is expected to make up 2 percent of the nation’s energy mix in two years. A recent National Renewable Energy Laboratory study, however, showed rooftop solar alone could make up 40 percent of the country’s supply.

“This is an incredible milestone for solar power, but there’s no time to rest on our laurels,” said Anna Aurilio, Environment America’s Washington, D.C. office director, who attended the solar installation this morning. “To maximize our vast potential and ensure a safer climate for our kids, we need to defend and expand the policies that made this celebration possible, and keep going to 100 percent clean, renewable energy.”
