Hillary Clinton opposes Keystone pipeline, increasing pressure on President Obama to reject it

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Former Secretary of State and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton today stated her opposition to building the Keystone XL pipeline, arguing it would be a “distraction” from combating climate change. According to the State Department, the pipeline’s construction would add 26 million metric tons of carbon pollution to our atmosphere each year, the equivalent of putting another 5.7 million cars on the road. Environment America’s Rachel Richardson, the director of the organization’s Stop Drilling program, issued the following statement:
 
“The Keystone XL pipeline would slam the accelerator on global warming, so it’s great news that Secretary Clinton wants to apply the brakes. Her announcement today is a testament to the scores of Americans who’ve been working to protect their water, their land, and the future of the planet by stopping the dirty Keystone project. Clinton’s announcement ups the ante on President Obama to make one of his own: it’s time for him to reject this dangerous pipeline once and for all.”
